They then compared the two sets of data to see how well they lined up. They did the same for historical observed weather data. To test the models, the team used a machine learning technique called self-organizing maps to group daily weather patterns simulated by the climate models into a set of 12 categories. These patterns range from those associated with warm and dry weather, to cold and stormy and everything in between. For this study, the researchers used data from the state-of-the-art sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) to test how well 26 different climate models could simulate the range of large-scale patterns of atmospheric circulation (like wind and pressure) found over the Pacific Northwest. Since all computer models have different strengths and weaknesses based on differences in physics, scientists often use the output from many different climate models to assess projections of future climate change. "If the models can't reproduce important features of the observed climate, they will not be very useful for studying the future climate." "These complex computer models that simulate the Earth system can be thought of as virtual laboratories for climate science experimentation," says Loikith. Researchers from Oregon State University and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory also contributed to the study, which was published in the journal Climate Dynamics. A new study led by Graham Taylor, a PhD student in Portland State's Earth, Environment, and Society program and Paul Loikith, associate professor of geography at PSU, tested how well climate models represent large-scale weather patterns over the Pacific Northwest.

According to the study, this result was down to the greater plasticity of the young brain, and the length of exposure to the music. "Rubric" and "Façades" both appeared in the 2008 documentary about Philippe Petit, Man on Wire. The young children’s increased spatial-temporal abilities lasted for 24 hours, in contrast to the initial Mozart-based experiment, the results of which only lasted for 15 minutes. Floe borrows a theme from Jean Sibelius's fifth symphony. The layering of contrasting timbres is characteristic of the piece as a whole. There is no modulation, but the harmonic progression simply repeats over and over again. Although rhythmically driven, the melodic implications of "Floe" occur somewhat coincidentally by orchestration. There are two formulaically identical sections to the movement. The movement has been arranged for and performed by Gamelan Pacifica. Formally it consists of three groups of four measure phrases of three to four chords repeated four times each, ABC:||ABC, which then merges with the next movement, "Floe" with the entrance of the horns. "Opening" uses triplet eighth notes, over duple eighth notes, over whole notes in 4Ĥ. "Closing (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, horn, viola, violoncello, piano) 6:03.This movement has its origins in the film score Koyaanisqatsi, but was ultimately not used in the film it is often performed as a work in its own right (ISWC T-010.461.089-0). The continuing influence of these works has secured their stature as part of the new “classics” of our time. In a series of innovative recordings made in the late 70’s, David and Brian combined influences from world music, experimental avant-garde, and rock and roll and thereby redefined the future of popular music. While we know not everyone will think these are the cutest sandals available (our editor who tried them out didn't think so either), we think the level of comfort these shoes bring to the table and their affordable price point more than make up for their average design. We also noted that they felt super lightweight and the extra cushioning in the soles left our joints feeling protected from hard surfaces like concrete. When we tried them during testing, we were impressed by how our feet never slid around-a result of the three adjustable straps.ĭespite the elevated heel from the arch, we always felt supported walking up and down stairs, on uneven sidewalks, and during long strolls. The memory foam contours to your feet, while the shock-absorbing midsole protects against impact. Skechers Go Walk Arch Fit Affinity sandals provide excellent arch support and cushioning for all-day comfort. It’s Worth Noting: These sandals may not be a great fit for those with narrow feet. Why We Like It: The Skechers Go Walk Arch Fit Affinity features memory foam, which contours to your feet and provides cushioning, while the midsole has an extra layer of shock-absorbing material. These are the best sandals with arch support. Our top picks can help with plantar fasciitis, overpronation, flat feet, and high arches-and they're comfortable enough to wear all day long. We also tested 32 sandals to see how they held up on our daily strolls. We researched dozens of sandals with arch support and consulted with podiatrists to find the best options with contoured footbeds, cushioned midsoles, heel cups, and secure straps for optimal fit. However, sandals that do boast arch support will provide the opposite result (less strain) as they conform to the feet to support proper function, he adds. Said Atway, DPM, a podiatrist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explains that sandals without arch support can eventually cause pain due to the strain they put on foot ligaments. Often, a heel cup or strap can help keep your foot in place and prevent slippage. When buying sandals for arch support, look for a style with good arch coverage and adjustability for the best fit. They also often have features like contoured footbeds and cushioned midsoles to further reduce pain. Sandals with arch support work to distribute your weight evenly across your feet, to help ease pressure on the arches. Arch conditions like plantar fasciitis can be painful and debilitating, but the right pair of sandals may provide relief. Note: Actually Viveza is not generating any masks. Viveza allows you to visualize the control reach of an U Point by showing a mask like this: U Point #3 darkens the yellow/orange and also boosts a bit the saturation. Step 3: Change the saturation of the yellow/orange buddha elements Point #1 is more in control for greenish tones and #2 more for all sorts of bluish-grays. If there would be only U Point #1 it would dominate the whole image. Here we have to learn how to use U Points. You can see that this U Point also made the sky darker and this is not what we wanted. Advanced Properties: You can also change some more advanced properties like Hue, Red, Green, Blue and Warmth. But the further a pixel in the image is away the lower is the influence of any U Point. In principle each U Point influences the whole image. Radius: Defines the main reach of the U Point. The more other pixels differ in these properties the less they get influenced by this U Point. Please Visit the all new Digital Outback Photo Subsequent audio mastering was done by Jonathan Schenke. It took seven to eight months for Girl Talk to complete work on the album. He was also working as a biomedical engineer at the time, obliging him to divide his time between his day job and his music career, including production of the album. The album was created by Girl Talk as one long piece of music, which he subsequently split into individual tracks. He also recorded original synthesizer and keyboard instrumentation for certain tracks. The entirety of Night Ripper was produced using a WAV digital audio editor, with Girl Talk manipulating samples by chopping, layering and transitioning them. Songs come out everyday so it's never ending." So I've been cataloguing samples for years, I have this massive library. I sample loops and breaks and vocal clips all the time. Commenting on the process of choosing samples to use, he explained: "I'll just hear something on the radio or at a party and go ahead and sample it off a CD or record or download it. ĭescribed by Girl Talk as "a record that reflects own personal music tastes," Night Ripper features over 300 samples of other artists' songs, spanning several decades and genres. The album's stylistic change was brought about by Girl Talk's experiences performing live, which influenced him to "make the music more accessible and push the party vibe." Following the release of Unstoppable, he spent an additional two years touring before beginning work on his third studio album. While still retaining the sample-based nature of Secret Diary, Unstoppable focused more on beatwork as well as structuring and layering samples into full tracks. Night Ripper was later re-released for download on the Illegal Art website through a new " pay what you want" pricing system. None of the samples used on the album were cleared prior to release, causing several online retailers to pull the album from their listings. Illegal Art initially released Night Ripper as a digital download on their website, later making the album available on other sites and shipping the album to select record stores due to strong demand. The album was produced by Girl Talk in seven to eight months and mastered by Jonathan Schenke. The album was originally produced as one seamless piece of music before subsequently being broken into individual tracks. He constructed Night Ripper whilst working as a biomedical engineer, dividing time between both of his occupations. The album is composed almost entirely of samples taken from other artists' music, along with minor original instrumentation recorded by Girl Talk himself. I can talk like young people. It's a difficult sector of the watch industry to achieve a distinct look but Mike has achieved this and the quality of design stands out. For more information and to get launch alerts, visit /benguela, and sign up for the newsletter. Kickstarter preorders start on August 13 with a special launch offer of $349 for the Seiko movement, and $469 for the ETA 2824-2. The watch is loaded with cool details, and the specs are absolute overkill. Both the 70’s style black natural rubber and beefy tan leather incorporate quick-release pins, signed buckles, and look great. The straps worked well too, although the lug design stops any upward travel, making it impossible to lie the watch flat. It fastens with a signed, ratcheting flip-lock clasp. Quick-release pins make removal a painless process. It is a quality piece with more than ample links to fit those with sizable wrists - a reasonable assumption given the Benguela’s generous proportions. For me, the standard 22mm bracelet was the best option as it looks best with the hooded lugs. I got a bracelet and two straps with the sample. If you can’t read this watch in the dark, you really need to get your eyes checked. On the Benguela, X1-C3 is used to striking effect on the markers, and it also graces the signed crown. Those chunky markers looming over the pools of lume below are an absolute joy. Text is printed in a pleasing and properly proportioned typeface, the model name in corresponding red-orange color. A red-orange-tipped lollipop second hand finishes it off. Large sword hands (bead-blasted, of course) pair well with the oversized hour markers. The porthole 6 o’clock date window is framed in a bead-blasted ring, and the disk itself is lumed. Toothy, bead-blasted markers like pop through the chapter ring to overhang similarly shaped cutouts in the sandwich dial beneath, which itself reveals a layer of vintage lume. There are no wrong choices here.Īll of Draken’s watches have featured cleverly detailed dials, and the Benguela’s is particularly fun. Moreover, it warms my heart by being $100 cheaper. The Seiko powered version bests the ETA on power reserve (41 hours instead of 38) and is, as far as I’m concerned, utterly awesome. the Seiko’s 21.6k) and, of course, Swissness. The Swiss unit boasts a higher, smoother beat rate (28.8k vs. The markings are markings deeply engraved and filled, a yellow lume triangle at the top center.īuyers have the option of two equally unflappable movements, a Swiss ETA 2824-2 or a Japanese Seiko NH35A. Note the angled cuts – a subtly appealing touch that makes the edge more comfortable and attractive. It is one solid stainless steel unit with broadly spaced indentations that provide a secure grip. Of course, it has a 120-click bezel, which its an impressive piece all by itself. If you are a normal human being living a normal human life, there is little you can do to rattle this beast. It boasts a helium escape valve (red-orange-ringed no less!), knurled screw-down crown, 3.7mm domed and anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal, and a whopping 500m water resistance. It is probably the best case art I have seen this year.Ī dive watch this big had better be able to back up its Thicc Boi* posturing with some solid specs and the Benguela delivers. Those ominous tentacles stand in high relief. The punch-engraved case back is simply outstanding. The Benguela certainly doesn’t want for wrist presence, but thanks to some thoughtful curvature, it wasn’t at all unwieldy on my 6.75” wrist. This is generally not one of my favorite elements, but on this watch, it seems entirely in keeping with its aggressive design brief. Like the Kalahari before it, the watch has the Draken name deeply engraved onto the side. Hooded lugs make it appear even more substantial, although it wears surprisingly well. The stainless steel case measures 43mm wide and is a beefy 15mm thick. Like previous Drakens, the Benguela is not small. I had the sample just long enough to get a good feel for it, and it felt darn pretty good. Well, we are now just two days away from launch, and I am ready to share my review of the black-dial prototype he sent me. A couple of weeks ago, I told you about the Benguela, a new diver that Draken Watches was preparing to launch on Kickstarter.
